Joan Pi

Director of Music Ministries

Joan Pi has been serving as the Director of Music Ministries at Three Chopt since January 2012. She oversees the music program for Sunday worship as well as other music related function in and out of Three Chopt Presbyterian Church during the week. Her main role on Sundays includes leading the 9:15 worship band and children’s music, teaching the cherub choir, and directing the cancel choir. She coordinates soundboard volunteers and oversees paid and volunteer musicians. During the program year, Joan forms and directs Joyful noisemakers (children’s bell choir), children’s choir, and adult bell choir as needed in addition to weekly choir rehearsals and band rehearsals. As a team, she works very closely with the pastor and all the staff to plan worship and other church function to assist with music, such as Lent, Holy Week, Easter, Christmas Eve, Christmas Pageant, VBS, funerals and weddings, and many others. She is a staff resource for Worship ministry team.

Joan was born and raised in Seoul, Korea, moved to Montreal, Canada with her family when she was 18, and has lived in many other areas of North America including Connecticut, Long Island (NY) and Texas before coming to Richmond, VA. She taught choral/vocal music for middle school, high school, and college for seven years while in Texas. Joan holds a doctoral degree in Choral Conducting from Stony Brook University, a master’s degree and an Artist Diploma in Choral Conducting with a certificate in Sacred Music from Yale University, and a bachelor’s degree in Music Education (voice) from McGill University.

During her work hours, she spends much time researching and studying music repertoire, communicating with staff and members, practicing piano and voice unless she is in worship, rehearsals and meetings. She takes Fridays off. Joan is also an adjunct music faculty at John Tyler Community College, where she teaches a class or two per semester, and a frequent guest singer of Schola Cantorum, a professional choral ensemble based at The Cathedral of the Sacred Heart, Richmond, VA.

Joan and her husband, Jaechul “Jay”, a covenant pastor at Burkeville Presbyterian Church (Burkeville, VA) and a chaplain in the U.S. Army Reserve, live in Glen Allen with their daughter, Katelyn.
